Struggling to set up boxed bike!

Hi,
I just bought a second hand Carrera Subway which looks to be in great nick apart from very slight buckle to the rear wheel (anything to worry about?).
I am pretty new to any sort of bike maintenance and the bike turned up without the pedals attached, the handlebars needed attaching and the front wheel needed putting on.
I got the handlebars on no prob, the front wheel went on too but the V brakes are all wonky and I am not sure how to align them up.
The other thing is getting the pedals on….I have no idea what to do and what I need!
Can anyone help me with what I need to do?
Cheers and apologies in advance for asking such beginner questions.
Cheers,
Al

your best bet is to read the relavent topics on Parktools.

  • Dead handy, thanks mate!
Can I ask you one other question...my 'proper' bike (the Carrera is just for commuting) is an off road MTB with disk brakes. I have not used it for about 6 months and yesterday I tried spinning the front wheel and its sticking and hardly turning.
Do you know what could be wrong?

Wheel bearings need a service or brakes binding.

  • I do quite a bit of self taught maintanence and I hate V brake fiddling

Front wheel - take to LBS, if it's bearings and you don't know a lot about bike maintenance not the best thing to fiddle with, although I'd be surprised if it's a bearing problem

If the brakes then again, don't fiddle if you havn't time to go through youtube, parktools ect learning what to do!! You might find your LBS, if it's tiny, won't touch hydraulics, I know one of mine won't. Don't take it to evans cycles if you can help it they'll charge the earth

If an LBS wont touch hydraulic brakes it shouldnt be in business!

Thanks for that snippet of info, there's some excellent info on there. I really need to get into servicing stuff myself...
