Even more force? It can take a hell of a lot if seized...

Are you standing behind the wheel, spanner and chain whip at about 3 o'clock & 9 o'clock? That normally works for me. Do you have a bigger spanner? Little spray of WD40 might help on the lock ring too.
  • Slide a bit of bar over your spanner to make like easier.

As above - the technical term is to "mash the fecker" - they can be very tight indeed, so lots of leverage and brute force, but be careful for when it goes it will spin right round and you'll end up smacking yourself with something (floor/wheel/whip/spanner) and skinning your knuckles apart on the cassette.

When doing up - lots of copperslip and torque to 40Nm

+1 to Juankerr's post. Stand with wheel against your legs, cassette facing away from you, chain whip and spanner horizontal, and push down with all your weight on both.

And put some thick gloves on..

The amount of times i've skinned my knuckes when undoing a cassette is crazy.. Anyone would have thought i would have learned by now!

If you have access to a vice then lock your cassette removal tool in the vice and turn the wheel. Much more leverage that way and less likely to flay the skin from your knuckles when it eventually releases.

Also before applying large amounts of motive force pop the skewer through the cassette tool to stop it twisting out under load.
