Magicshine MJ-880 or MJ-816E

I have to order this online so I can't test it out. Does anyone have any opinions on which would make the best all around light for commute and trails?
I know the 880 is brighter, but is the wider coverage of the 816 really that much better? Also, if any of you have tested either one out, which has better distance?
Thanks!

Just bought two of the MJ-872 1600 lumen each and they are awesome, wouldn't say they were pumping out that though more like 1300 but great all the same and for the money you can't go wrong I picked up both of them for £180.Zesty 514 Scott Scale 20 GT Expert HalfwayupMTB0

I have the 816 i use for commuting and trail and find them plenty bright enough i frequently get abused by walkers for blinding them! You can also pick up a 816 set for about 90 off magicshine s site at the mo but get the better mount for trail use.The family that rides together stays together !

+1 tarbot.
you'll need a better mount as i find it "wobbles" alot on anything remotely bumpy.....0 -
The MJ-880 might be brighter (seriously how many lumens does one need?) but have you seen the size of the battery pack? The current iteration on the MJ-872 is large enough and can even be used by runners who have to carry it on themselves. The newest battery pack needs some refactoring IMO.0

Forget the 816 E
The Mj-880 blows it away on both width and depth.
Worth looking at other options at this price though like the Gemini Lights Olympia and the Inton 2200.
I Still run a MJ-872 and MJ-808 on bars and a XML Thrower Light on my head and dont see any reason to upgrade yet.

I own the MJ-880 and can recommend it. The lighthead is small, light and well manufactured and the beam is wide and strong. It's easy to fix and adjust, both on the bar and on the helmet. On the highest power level the battery life is however seriously reduced and imho the number of the increments to increase/decrease is not very practical. The battery is heavy and clunky for what it does for you. I consider replacing it by a pack from Openlight Systems with Panasonic cells. I've only run it in winter so I can't judge the cooling at this stage. Conclusion: at this price point you can't go wrong with the MJ-880 if you look for a strong light for MTB use.0

I have to agree with the above. I had the 816e until it was stolen along with my bike (rip) and when I came to buying a new light I went for the MJ-880U here:

As much as I loved my 816 I have to say the 880u beats it in almost every way! It's brighter and its much more compact and lighter weight wise. I now run this on my helmet and forget its even there.0
