Quick question about chainset compatibility

I'm currently after a 105 chainset and need one pretty quick! (I'e posted in the 'wanted' forum). I'm now thinking perhaps it doesn't have to be a Shimano chainset, but maybe something else could work too?

So, can anyone please enlighten me as to whether I can get some other branded chainset to go with my 105 shifters? I'm guessing it will come down to the spacing between the chainrings, no?

Any model suggestions would be very much appreciated!

Just about any make of chainset will work fine. Just make sure you use a compatible BB.

any chainset - 9 or 10 speed - will do, the difference in spacing is too small to have an effect.

If you're looking around 105 price point then I'd consider a SRAM Apex or Rival (alos look for truvativ which are the same but often a bit cheaper as they are usually only sold OEM) for which you'll need a GXP bottom bracket. Similar quality and much better looking than shimano IMHO, I like shimano stuff on the whole but the chainsets are fugly.
