Comedienne Roseanne Barr has joined the race to be US president.

She filed papers yesterday allowing her to run for election in November as a Green Party candidate.

Barr, 59, is pledging to make cannabis legal, write off all credit card and mortgage debt, make war illegal and include more women in government.

She said in a candidate questionnaire: "I will barnstorm American living rooms."

And she is convinced her alternative to the US two-party system gives her a chance - amid the waning popularity of Democrat President Obama and the failure of Republican campaigners Mitt Romney and Newt Gingrich to capture voters' enthusiasm.

Barr, who runs a nut farm in Hawaii, said in a statement: "The Democrats and Republicans have proven they are servants who are not doing what's in the best interests of Americans."

And she tweeted: "If people will merely do as I tell them to do just this one time, I promise everything will get a lot better quickly 4 the majority."

Her party's nominee will be chosen in July.
