What bike would you use? I have heard that fixies are best but I i really don't know.. All I know is that I might leave the Brompton and race bikes at home :p

A fatbike like the Surley Pugsley or Moonlander would be best

I saw a Cross Bike at work with studded tyres, which I guess should work pretty well in the ice.

That's what people here in Finland use. You need enough clearance for wider, studded tyres with some tread. The studs alone will keep you upright on ice or hard packed snow but for softer snow and slush you also need some tread and something not too narrow.

I use a CX bike in snow, but you definitely need studded-tyres if there's ice - it's just too painful to contemplate riding without. I'd love to try a Surley Pugsley or other fat bike on snow - we have lots of deep sand around here so it would be good for that too.
Make mine an Italian, with Campagnolo on the side..
  • Cross bike or 29er MTB with studded tyres. Pugsleys are great if you like in Alaska or summat but overkill for 99.9% of UK riding. A cross bike is excellent in snow with proper tyres on and can be used for other things when the snow melts, even cross

I use my urban utility, do-everything, 8-speed hub gear, disk brake, 26" wheel, non-suspension, dynamo-lighted folding bike for snow riding.
I replace the fat slicks with home-made studded MTB knobblies which is not a nice job in the cold. I would love to have a spare wheelset but most of the value of the bike is in the wheels.
Last year the cold weather froze my hub gear in whatever gear it was set so I replaced the grease with oil. It now runs well at much lower temperatures.

    One of these!
  • I have just been using my MTB on kendal all round tyres in it all, I fell once when I first went out testing the handling capeabilities and I have been ok since (apart from a bruise the size of a melon where the frame landed on my leg). riding at speed over bumpy ice is nerve racking, the bike feels like it's floating! I almost can't lean in to corners at all, really creates some entertaining riding :D
