I hesitate to post in this forum because I'm sure that 50% of roadies will see my bike as an affront. Disk brakes and Di2 on a road bike? WTF? Thing is I'm a commuter (in the Highlands - 33 mile RT) and this is my idea of a perfect bike for the journey - light (at around 8kg) but fast and comfortable. It's the first one in the UK. I've had a crap year (I'll spare you the details but I desperately hope you've not had a worse one) so I treated myself. It's a beautiful bike and I'm over the moon with it.

I know - I'm very sorry about that - I dashed out in a gap in the pouring rain and only realised when I was uploading the pics. I'lI say 10 hail marys before bed...

Awesome! A nice but immense pragmatic ride and credit to you. Bet it rides like a dream.

Hope your year gets better as soon as possible. :D
  • Interesting build, MRS... bet it does the business for your commute...

What are the disc brakes? How do they compare to rim callipers? (I can't wait for Campag to bring out a disc brake... I'll be first in the queue...)

They're Avid BB7s - cable discs. I've been using a BB7 on the front (standard BB5 on the rear) of my Boardman CX for a few months now and I'm totally sold on discs for all-weather use - especially for hilly rides like mine. They just inspire huge confidence in the braking zones. I know not everyone is convinced - that's fine - a light rider on a light bike on a dry day I'm sure has no use for them the majority of the time. They are a doddle to set up and incredibly reliable. I also feel happier that the crap on the winter roads isn't machining away my rims.

Love it, looks like the love child of a Venge and a BMC and thats no bad thing.
Hope it brings a smile to your face, nice to see a bike on here thats built for purpose and not just pose value.

I was thinking of treating myself to the new PX carbon cross frame and running BB7'S and a lower spec build myself as a good all round compromise,

I have a kaffenbach (Old style frame) which has gone through various builds and the compromise has always been braking , so I like the idea of cable discs.

Would you consider an upgrade to something like the TRP parrallelbox hydraulic system or are you happy with what youv'e got.

Looks great, first read about Volagi the other week in regard to be sued by Specialized!

I wonder how long it'll be before the pro-peleton will be using disc brakes, not long I'm sure...............

Think I'd need to understand what the TRP system offers in addition to what the BB7 gives. Discs is less about ultimate braking power as BB7 gives plenty but as much to do with modulation and all-weather braking. I don't know that hydraulics is going to give that much more. I might look at it when they finally bring out a full hydraulic shifter but BB7 is so simple.

Bike looks the dogs dangles! You must be well pleased!

I first heard of Volagi when the whole court case thing settled with specialized, must have been cracking advertising for the company. Great to see a manufacturer ignoring rules and just making a superb bike, and all that kit just 8Kg!
  • Thanks for all the kind comments.

Yup - my favourite saddle is a Spesh Toupe but I'm not sure I should use one on this bike! As you say, great publicity for them and they effectively "won" (award of $1 to Specialized).

OK - I'll see what I can do later. Been out for a quick spin on it between the sheets of ice on the road. I have to say that I've never felt so instantly at home on a bike - shame the weather isn't better. Di2 is great though, there's obviously something about the way my brain works, that had me having to think which lever to pull for which shift! Only issue was seatpost kept slipping - I'm just out now getting some carbon paste.

Think we are getting a glimpse of the future here.

Pretty soon one of the big boys will be doing integrated levers to work hydraulic disc systems all in one.

My money is on SRAM , I think the fact that 2012/13 YM red as stayed 10 speed means they aren't ready for an electronic gruppo yet and Shimano and Campag will continue to lead the way.

However I think Srams ownership of AVID and the size of the CX market in the States will see them developing lightweight integrated shifter and Hydraulic brakes in order to make their gruppos more standout.
  • I love it. The shifting is so quick and effortless.

The bars, BTW, are 44cm Pro-Lite Ravenna. My Cayo came with them and I found them really comfortable.

I nailed the only Strava segment that was on my route today that is also on my commute - a time I set in July on the Cayo in full summer gear. 17.4km/h then and 18.1km/h today with no wind to speak of.

Not especially happy with the mudguard - need to look for a better version - but it's what I had to hand

As mentioned on the Commuter forum thread, I love this bike - the looks, the spec and the design for a good commuting bike press all my buttons . Can you post up the full spec for us please? (In the meantime must resist n+1 temptation...)

Thanks - basically it looks like the Liscio Ultegra spec, except where the mechanical shifting bits of Ultgra have been upgraded to Di2 where needed?

PS: how tall are you MRS? (want to get an idea of what height person that 57cm size is suitable for).

Exactly that. Ordered the Liscio Ultegra and bought the Di2 Upgrade Kit from Germany and the bars from JE James

    I'm 6' with approx 33" inside leg.

Thanks - must say am very tempted by the Rival specced version as a commuter steed.

Love the concept, love the look.

After converting my commuter to bb7s, I certainly miss the braking at the weekend on my other bike. Waiting for the day when these are allowed/common in bc races then I'll fully convert.

I could be slightly fussy and say that the mudguard needs adjusting as it is too far away from the wheel - but that's nit picking.

That's a fair cop. It's just a spare mudguard I had kicking around and I'd chucked it on just to get riding. Will have a hunt around for a guard tht uses the guard mounts but is a little bit more sporty
