bottom brackets

Hi folks, hope you can help here as i'm a little unsure. I am looking at a new racing BMX frame for my son. The spec lists a euro BB, i have seen pics of the bike complete and they have used and external bottom bracket. I want to use my current cranks that are square taper fitting. Can i fit a normal bottom bracket instead of the external? Am i right in thinking the frame thread is the same for internal and external. The bike is a GT speed series junior race bmx. Any advice would be very welcome.

It will be standard euro/MTB thread size and should also be 68mm wide.
