I Am looking to get a hardtail mountain bike for adventure racing event but only have a small budget of £500.

What would you recommend?

Rockrider from Decathlon or Carerra from Halfords is the standard reply.
Not sure what adventure racing is though?

I think its where some of the race is on a bike, but you do other stuff too; canoeing, obstacle courses, maybe even a bit of orienteering? I have a mate who does them - I seem to remember him saying the mtb sections generally aren't so demanding on the bikes as they don't want to exclude people who don't have the money/urge to buy a good quality mtb. I guess that varies from race to race.

But yeah they're the best specced bikes for that money, unless you stumble upon a crazy clearance deal somewhere.
  • Cyclocross bike would probably be a better bet for adventure racing - no need for bouncy front bits. for the money you mention maybe Ebay would be the best bet?
