Hi folks,

Not being lazy, but also not really knowing what I'm looking for in the first place, I haven't really trawled through the details of the googly announcement - but I'm willing to bet that some of you have and have a far better understanding than I.

So, can anyone enlighten (in layman's terms) me as to what real-world impact either good or evil these changes will bring?

It must be good, Googles moto is 'don't be evil' after all...

Basically they are gonna share your data between all their products to enhance your browsing experience. So at the minute the advertisements you see alongside your GMail are based on the content of your emails. Going forward they will be able to show advertisements for things you may have commented on or shared via Google+.

I had a look at their privacy tools. They knew my interests, sex (which wasn't one of the interests strangely) and had my age flatteringly wrong. I disabled all the advert info sharing stuff and started getting adverts for things that I had no interest in and it really annoyed me. So I'm trying to opt back in.
  • Does anyone in the world use google+? :D

I just run a browser with an ad blocker, email ads might be for viagra and hedgehogs for all i know, i never see them! :D

I'll give you one immediate effect. Today I had three windows open comparing the chemistry of various stainless steels, flicked over to check on the forum and the banner ad was from a steel bar stockholder advertising stainless bar. We've seen it pick up on thread content, but now it can pick up on unrelated browsing.

Will it do the same from Google Desktop I wonder? Getting close to sufficiently paranoid to kill all Google from my systems as I'm not sure of data safety TBH.

  • Might as well never use the internet again, to be honest Simon, if that is how you feel about it.

Any 'free' site means you are the product...

    Update.

My opt-in has worked. Looking at a thread about chairs prompted chair ads, a link I followed to some fencing brought about fencing and decking ads. What I can't figure out is the advert featuring a brown bear on how to stop bush fires in America. Where did that come from ? Haven't looked at anything featuring bush, our web filtering would block it :D
  • The only painful feature from my perspective is that I sometimes use a commercial googledocs account managed by one my companies clients. This means I need to make sure I log out of that before following youtube links that people post or I might end up having to answer some awkward questions. ;)
