withs with the cold weather I am looking for a warm base layer, went in the local aldi yesterday and they have a Lycra base layer that's fleecy inside, anyone got one? Are they worth buying at just a tenner?

Most of the Crane Sports cycling kit Aldi sell is spot on, and not just for the money. I spent £30 last year on:
2 x Winter Gloves (best Winter gloves I've ever had!)
2 x Baselayers
3 x Merino socks.
I'm very impressed with all of it. The base layers are significantly better than others I've had such as Helly Hansen Lifa. I got a Craft Zero Extreme one for Xmas and the Aldi ones are (after a years use) as good as, or better. Altough, mine aren't fleece lined....
Buy a couple while they are in stock, keep the receipt and only wear one, if you don't like it then take the others back. You've only wasted a £10 but that's better than spending twice that amount from Wiggle, CRC, etc to find out it's crap.“Training is like fighting with a gorilla. You don’t stop when you’re tired. You stop when the gorilla is tired.”0 -
as above - buy them. In my opinion, the aldi base layers are every bit as good as anything else on the market - and for the price they are probably far better value than anything else on the market.0

Thanks guys for the advice, just on my way to get some, then give it a try later.0

I found the ski stuff to be a bit better than the cold weather cycling stuff. The socks are long, a bit thicker, warmer I think and great for wearing under tights. The Thermal top I got sounds like the base layer you found but was also marketed as a skiing top. It has a slightly high neck on it, lovely fleecy feel to it and I love it. It has replaced my Endura base layer during this cold weather spell.0

Yes I think that's the one I got today, got a large but a bit loose so changed it for medium, been out in it and was great in the cold, was the only medium they had or would have bought two, it was a quarter of the price of those in my lbs. will be looking out for another.0

The Aldi kit is an absolute bargain, half my cycling wardrobe is from there, and the other half from China!http://www.snookcycling.wordpress.com - Reports on Cingles du Mont Ventoux, Alpe D'Huez, Galibier, Izoard, Tourmalet, Paris-Roubaix Sportive & Tour of Flanders Sportive, Amstel Gold Xperience, Vosges, C2C, WOTR routes....0

I'm almost a moving advert for Aldi and Wiggle.
Last autumn I bought the Aldi Winter Jacket, trousers and a combo pack with overshoes and a skull cap. Have used all of them except the overshoes through the winter and find them excellent when paired up with some DHB (Wiggle) padded undershorts and a couple of base layers - 1 x Helly Hansen and 1 x Trekmates.
Instead of the overshoes I invested in a pair of these:-

squeezed into my DHB cycling shoes.
Got them off my local market for £4.50. best money I've spent all winter.
Pair of Thinsulate woollen gloves on my hands (£3.00 from Go Outdoors)
Have done 30 miles in temperatures approaching zero and been warm as toast.
Reckon I've kitted myself out from head to toe for less than the cost of one of the big brand winter jackets - but not being a label tart I don't really care0 -
Very new to this so can't give a very balanced opinion, but...
I've just bought my first bike and due to the temperature dropping off but wanting to still get out on it I picked up a base layer from Aldi last weekend and did 10 miles in it at about 0 degrees and it felt great. Never felt cold and didn't get any breathability issues. Comfort was fine, wish I'd bought another one to be honest.0 -
can't beat Aldi or Lidl none named brands work well and last for ever - they normally back there stuff up with a 3 year warranty so they last
when i started i bought Aldi gear 2.4 years on its still in excellent shape and washes really well, base layers look decent, socks and shorts jackets all good
cheap as chips (chips aint cheap these days tho :-) )0 -
i can't comment on the Aldi stuff but I've just come back from a week skiing in France. I took a Planetx merino top ( http://www.planet-x-bikes.co.uk/i/q/CLP ... ayer_190gm) and a HellyHansen polyprob with me.
The merino was great. Warm and very comfortable. I wore it all week and it still smelled fresh at the end of the week. The HH didn't even come out of the case. I'd rather have one merino than two man made material baselayers.0 -

I've been surprised how well my Lidl bib tights handle the cold!
they're the insulated kind, and the pad isn't as soft as a £100 pair.. but they've been great down to -2C so far!
the fit is probably better on more expensive kit.. but for £15 i'm not going to complain.0 -
Is the aldi stuff available at the moment does anyone know?2015 Specialized S-Works Tarmac - Ultegra Di2 (7.0kg)
Kinesis Aithein - Ultegra mechanical (7.3kg)
Kinesis Maxlight Xc130 - xt/ xtr (11.3kg)
spin to win!0 -
I used the aldi in Blackpool, they didn't have any cycling specific clothing, the base layer I bought was for general use, but it really does the job, they also had one for snowboarding which someone on here bought and said it was great for bike use.0
