I bought some Castrol LM grease a while ago for bike duties from hub greasing to seatpost greasing...but I've noticed the stuff the bike shops use seems alot thinner....

Should I be using a thinner-bike specific-grease and if so why?

And of course - what would you recommend/use

Don't worry, the grease you have is ideal for wheel bearings and will do as a general all round grease for threads and the like.

I use the appropriate rock and roll greases for particular applications.

That said, at work we use cheapo purple stuff for 90% of jobs. Only bikes on the expensive service get decent grease.

Normal moly for anything, copperslip for anything that doesn't turn/spin.
