Route planning

I am thinking of cycling from Richmond (south west London) to the Isle of Wight via Portsmouth. The obvious route is down the A3 but it's not exactly a pretty ride. Does anyone have a better route or is there a good route planner that I can use?
Or doyouguys thinkthe A3 is an OK route to ride?

If you use the walking setting on Google maps you get something less suicidal that you can drag and drop to suit your purpose.Neil

AL1 in this case you dont. The A3 is dual carriageway from at least the M25 and not rideable. I would plug inthe googlemap route as above and drag it to shadow the A3 on minor roads

I did a similar ride in March last year over two days. You could use these as a starting point:

You could shorten it quite a bit by heading due south-west from Horsham.0 -
You could use the NCN routes as a basis:

Unless you really need to start at Cowes, IMO the Lymington to Yarmouth ferry is a much nicer alternative.0
