Ultegra triple lever not working.

My left shifter developed a problem on my ride on Saturday when it jammed and wouldn't change into the smaller front chainring. I slackened the cable off & the lever moved as normal but once there was tension in the cable the lever would not change up or down. I've taken it to my lbs who say I need a new lever costing £170
although I know they are cheaper online. As I had the bike cheap on ebay I do not have a warranty even though the bike is 2011 Cube Streamer.

Before I fork out for a new shifter I just wandered if anyone else has had this problem & can it be solved?

Thanks.

May be worth contacting Shimano before you fork out. You have nothing to lose.

I'm assuming there's no problem with the cable or front mech ?

Can you disconnect the cable from the front mech and
    - by hand, pivot the mech in and out into the positions it would have for all 3 rings ?
    - operate the shifter through all its clicks, whilst pulling the cable taut by hand and feeling the shifter pull-in or release cable depending on whether you're changing up or down ?

It could be that the cable is starting to fray, inside the shifter.
I had that once, where the wires were seperating out of the cable and getting all jammed-up inside the shifter.

With the cable disconnected from the mech, click the shifter into the inner-ring position, releasing tension on the cable.
Pull the brake on to open-up the shift lever and then push the cable inner up into the outer - the 'plum' on the end of the cable should push out of side of the shifter and you can check it's not fraying
