I'd be interested in seeing anyone's gruesome pics of their injurys when they were out MTbing.
I suffered a broken collar bone & got taken to hospital in 2010. I had only gotten back into cyling for about 4 months and I had just got some new pedals & took the bike for a spin up the canal, I confess to going faster than I should have been coming round a corner on a decline, a tarmacced path at the bottom of a park, quite rural though. In the middle of pavement suddenly an old man with a beard riding a fold up bicyle appeared and I slammed on the brakes, prob a bit more on the front than I should have being inexperienced and over the handlebars I go. SLAM snap *crunch* shoulder hits the pavement. after some shouting & swearing I came to my senses and asked the old man to ring for an ambulance, and he says 'oh are you sure?' r u king kidding me?! lol.
we picked up my bike and walked down to where the ambulance would come, whenever I moved my arm it hurt like hell so I just supported it with my other arm, I also had a very obvious lump between my shoulder and neck, clearly it was knackered.
I rang my wife and then rang my mate who had a van to come get my bike, what a trooper my mate drives over with his little lad in his van to get my bike, and I goes to hospital.
They took Xrays and said that it was so bad and close to the join they were going to open it up and insert a metal plate to help it bind and keep it in place. so thats what they did. anyway here are the pics. :? :o
um .. . . . .

so you (the op) came off on a canal/park path? by crashing into a pensioner, not exactly a classic mtb accident/injury then?

Cooldad gave a light hearted reply, maybe you took it wrong, but it looks OK to me......anyone who comes off has to expect some urine extraction round here!

I'll sort all the pics of my piercing......

  • Sure this "injury" Thread has been done before.. but for the record..

April 24, Saturday 2008, did a manual on the HT and lost it big time
Tried to stand up a few time then notice my bone protruding from my leg.
Anyway, a minor operation on the day it happened and discharged from hospital on Monday
Back in the saddle 91 days later.. here's my "Kodak Moment"

I don't collect X Rays, but at one time or another - approx 30 broken ribs (not all the same time) nose, jaw, wrist, two fingers (yep those two on my right hand), breastbone (makes you appreciate breathing), pelvis (hurts a lot), neck (scary one).
Nothing on a bicycle though, I used to ride and race motorcycles, not very well, obviously.

Was on the stand for the mtb club at the freshers fair for uni (bangor) this september just gone, and left a little early on the first day to go session a bit of local downhill with one of the other guys. There's this drop at the top of the track, not too big, but with a nice steep landing with some awkwardly placed rocks in it. Hit it the first time fine, the other guy went round it, just warming up etc. I asked if he hit it and when he said no, I remarked on how 'easy' this drop is. Second run down, stacked it over the bars, landed wrist first and (i think) broke my scaphoid. Doctors were never 100% sure, but i was off the bike for a good 4-5 weeks. Funny thing was, I was on the mtb stand again the next day with a cast on, having to tell people what I had done :D

The odd cut & a few stitches mountainbiking, done worse on my motorbike, nearly lost my left foot in an accident 30 years ago.

5 weeks in Stoke Manderville, numerous ops and the odd chat with the late Sir Jim as a result all the metatarsals are fused together in one mass and most of the tendons are missing... my foot now twists out around 5/10º compared to the right one and I have no feeling in it and limited movement.... but they were going to amputate it at my local hospital, so mustn't grumble....
A berm? were you expecting one?

  • When I was 12 I was sitting on a low wall in glasgow - behind me a steep descent to another road. Some guy - about 40 was walking along the path and stopped in front of me and asked - (in a Glasgow Moron accent) 'What are you looking at?'

    I replied 'nothing'

So the master of repartee said - 'You calling me nothing?' and then kicked me in the face breaking my nose and I rolled down the embankment and broke my arm.

    Had a few,

Used to race old skool BMX, was out practicing on a small pump track near me.
On about my 10th lap I cleared the first double no problem, the next was a step up, ramped off the face & didnt quite make it - front wheel bonked the top and spat me over the bars and over the top, next stop was 9ft down the backside to the floor.

Result = pulverised wrist & two broken ribs, 1 x metal plate a kevlar wrap and 9 ti screws later.
I did have elbow pads on and body armour.

In the A&E waiting room (I foolishly drove to the hospital)

  • When i was 15 , with a few pals on our way to a local fishing hot spot and we decide to go on bike, whilst going down hill ,i looked back to see where they were and next thing i know, im sitting in a ambo....get to a&e, to find out i have 2 inch of scalp folded back, broken thumb,4 inch hole in my hip area, plus various cuts and scratches and no recollection of how it happened, long story short as i looked back, i hit a sunken grid, over bars, slid on my head, hit the road like a pingpong ball and landed 50 yrds further down the road.............and to add insult to injury my pals came to visit me and bought 6 "adult mags" for me to read !! which didnt go down well with the nurses on the ward.
