So I wanna change over to Tubeless, I'm fedup repairing punctures and my mates being smug that they don't get punctures. But the whole tubeless thing seems so confusing..? There are terms like 'UST', 'tubeless' and 'tubeless ready'.?

Are they all the same thing, or is UST the same as tubeless, or tubeless ready the same as tuebless or what?

So far I think I've worked out that UST is proper tubeless, but you need proper UST rim (only Mavic seem to sell UST rim) and proper UST tyres, plus sealant if you want it. Is that right..?

So what about ‘tubeless’ and ‘tubeless ready’, what are they, and how do they fit in?

I ride XC and trail centres, not a free rider or downhiller - if that makes a difference..?

I went tubeless a few months ago and it was dead easy. I used Stans Notubes sealant. My rims are Ritchey Pro Disc which aren't tubeless ready. My tyres are Bont Mud-X which are tubeless ready though. I didn't change the rim tape either. Just drilled out the valve hole as per the instructions, added the sealant, pumped up first time with my floor pump. Been perfect ever since and sealing many punctures.

  • Buy yourself some duct tape 25mm wide from ebay £5 for 100 meters or so, bottle of stans sealant or wheel milk ect,
couple of valves, can be cut from a old tube (vale core removeable for prefrence) and some ust tyres (can use non ust, but some may not seal). 2 or 3 turns of tape round the wheel, insert old tube and blow up and leave over night. Remove tube, blow up without the tube in, add sealant. Do watch the stans video on their site or u tube on how to get the sealant working and use lots of washing up liquid to seat tyre and check for and small leaks.

Cheap, easy and works for me.

Tubeless Ready tyres basically means the tyres will accept the sealant - not all tyres do. Also have the tyre bead to hook into Tubeless Ready rims. Though they need strips to cover spoke holes.

UST does not need sealant, and hooks into UST rims that already have the spoke holes covered.

Totally Heath Robinson, as above, can be used with many normal rims and tyres.
  • Cheers, soz to be anal about this, but what does not all tyres will accept sealant mean. Will they just not seal, or will the sealant eat away at the tyre - breaking it down over time?

They will not seal, the tyre may sip from the walls if they are porous, they may never sit snug on the rims to seal...
