Which first time MTB for £800 to £1000?

Ive got £800 to £1000 to spend on new mountain bike.I am in great need of some good advice.
I am concerned that I will buy something that's completely wrong for me.
Any help appreciated.

Where will you be riding ie terrain? Any drops or jumps? How much do you weigh? What local shops are available?

I intend to cycle to work but also to do some mountain trails( nothing severe)
My weight will hopefully reduce the more I ride. Currently around 16 stone and 6' 2".
Steels cycles and Evans available locally. Ghost appeal to me
