Crankset change on old Marin

Needing some help as new to all this MTB stuff.
I've an old marin bike that has a crankset with broken teeth etc that's seriously needing sorting. Currently it has a 'White Industies' marked triple chainring (175mm crank) with 42/32/20 ratio operated by Shimano LX quick shifters and 8 speed rear cassette. Not sure of bottom bracket type but presuming square taper.
Small pic here:
Can anyone advise what I could put on as direct replacement? Struggling to find any with same 20 tooth small cog. Can I change to one with 22 teeth without changing anything else or even switch to 2 rings.
Any help most appreciated..

As long as the new small ring doesn't foul the chainstay, and I don't think it will.I don't do smileys.

You need a square taper chainset - butbe aware that they need pretty specific axle lengths so they sit in the right place - ie some rquire 113mm, others 121 and so on.
You could do with measuring the length of this axle, or looking it up.0 -
