Are the Planet X bikes good value?

However, I would be a "bit" wary of their claims of "Force" and "Red" build bikes - sometimes these are not full groupsets and will have cheaper chains/brakes/other components. This does not devalue the bikes at all - they just aren't quite as much of a mega bargain as they sometimes appear.

IMHO thats the same with a lot of brands, my Felt came with rival brakes and a rival cassette despite been a red build.

I am pretty keen on a PX Ti Sportive, which looks really good, especially as the frames are 'hand built' by Van Nicholas. Has anyone any experience of the recent PX Ti frames?

I have just recieved mine in the past 2-3 weeks. Absolutely gorgeous bike. I got the large and did wonder if it might be to big for me ( 5'9/10ish) Haven't took it out for a spin yet due to work commitments and weather, but it's actually a bit more compact than I expected and will fit beautifully. I just need a 120mm stem instead of the 90 it came with.

The frame is so much nicer in the flesh. The welding is buttery smooth. It's everything I hoped it would be and more. I even got it on the bike to work scheme :D

I'm on AL next week so will get out on it then and bang a first ride review up on BR with some pics of it. I just hope the rides what I hope it will be compared to my Carbon Bianchi that got trashed by a car.
Bianchi. There are no alternatives only compromises!
I RIDE A KONA CADABRA -would you like to come and have a play with my magic link?
  • Also one other thing if you have time on your hands and enjoy the building up of a bike then spend a bit of time shopping around. I am just in the process of building a PX bike for less than the cost PX want for the same frame model and the spec on mine is higher in some if not most areas. Taken me since November to assemble the parts. Kept checking various sites for the right parts at the right price. The best example been a £699.99 chainset been picked up for £199.99 8)
  • Very happy with my Nanolight. Had it made up with complete Dura Ace & it is a dream to ride. Sizing wise it is maybe a tad on the large size for me but i don't have problems with it - i am.just one of those inbetween sizes. PX own parts are nice & decent quality & for the money i would say the bikes they sell are great value for money.
  • I've had a Pro SL for a couple of years and it's brilliant, far more than my capabilities allow.

The best value with PX though is that they're fantastic people to deal with, their customer service is up there with the best. I've also found this with Merlin as well who run a very similar outfit.

The only thing I have against the SL Pro frame is that it is fecking ugly.

Really. I think it looks pretty good, especially if you have a decent amount of seat post on show.

I've had mine a while now (~3000 miles) and it's been absolutely faultless. It's done everything I've wanted it to do, stiff, light an comfy.
No regrets and the PX staff have been excellent.

    Doesn't look that bad IMO.....

With PX you have to be prepared to sometimes wait for them to have an excess amount of stock in order to get the best deal.

This is where PX do let themselves down. If they had a bikebuilder service like Ribble then they would be no contest IMO.

Like the others i got a PX Pro SL back in Jan 2009 when they had to pay off a VAT bill.

£1057 got me a Black PX Pro SL

Dura Ace 7800 Shifters and Rear derailleur

    Ultegra Front derailleur

FSA fsa gossamer Cranket and Brakes.

I should have only got planet x own handlebars but instead got Ritchey Pro Carbon Matrix Road Handlebars 8)

At the time in order to buy a similar priced bike in stores would have cost upwards of £2500!!!!

Its a purchase i've never regretted and have upgraded the brakes and crankset since. I agree that i do lust over a bike with heritage i.e Bianchi but i cannot justify the cost (£3500 upwards) to buy a similar specced bike

I know others may argue but PX are good/great frames. The Pro SL is old BUT has lasted because it is such a good frame.

Remember your £1000/£2000 Cervelo,Bianchi,Trek etc frame will be outdated within a year or 2 anyway.

My next bike will most likely be a nanolight or RT 57

Also good to know that if i do ever trash the frame in a crash it will not cost the earth to replace it
  • and most frames are made the same place so dont matter much who paints it and sticks a few stickers on it.

Isn't that a bit like saying that Tiagra and Dura Ace come out of the same factory so there is no difference?

    No

    Err, yes!
  • Err, if you bought a specialized bike, and it has specialized stickers and name on it, do you think it was made by specialized?
No course not, they are made at the Merida factory.

Err no. Unless of course Tiagra and Dura Ace components actually ARE exactly the same, but with different stickers on them. But they're not.
    More problems but still living....

But that doesn't mean they are the same frame, does it? Do you think the only difference between this...

    Is some paint and stickers?

Yes, I am aware that for example, the De Rosa 838 is the same frameset as the Ribble Stealth and that the De Rosa sells for quite a bit more. But that doesn't mean all frames are the same because they come out of the same factory in china (or Taiwan in Merida case).

Yeah, really sorry about that. Just read it and realised this thread is in fact a Planet X love in. I apologise to everyone for saying nasty things about what we all agree is the best bike brand (not manufacturer, obviously) in the world! I'm off now to the Planet X website to buy something with Sram Red!
