cutting steerer and tube and replacing star nut

Hi
I need to reduce the size of my steerer as its way too long. At the moment I have a lot of spacers above the stem and want to get rid of this top excess.
I'm happy cutting it with correct measurements but it's replacing the star nut that I'm puzzled by.
Do/can I take out the original star nut?? do I need a new one?? and how do I place it without a specific bike tool?
thanks

You'll need a new start nut... you can get a star nut setter for about a tenner, but you may as well bodge it or go LBS if you aren't going need one again.
You can bodge fitting a star nut using a long old threaded brakepad.0 -
Knock the nut further down the tube.0

hi
will that work, what is the best method to knock it further down without knackering it totally.
also, how far down below the top of the steerer should the nut be?0 -
It should be about a cm lower than the top. If you can find something to knock it down straight with (a long threaded bolt) it will work fine.0
