First decent ride on new bike

I've been riding bikes all my life... - & for the past four or so, i've been using a Trek hybrid to get to work & back and for occasionally weekend rides around the bridalways & whatnot near to where I live in surrey

Anyway - just got myself a road bike, - got a fantastic deal on a SL2 Tarmac Elite 2011

Today was the first chance I've had to take it for a decent spin..... - and my God it's impressive!!

Compare to what I'm used to... this thing goes like the absolute wind. Absolutely fly.s It picks up speed in no time, and pretty much effortless to reach the kind of speeds I would have to really work for to get even near on the old hybrid.

I brought a road bike because I wanted to go faster, and I had high expectations, ... but from experience, having a high expectation of something usually leads to disappointment... - but has definitely been an exception... - it's exceeded my expectations greatly, ...now I can't wait to get full SPD-SLs, tights etc and get into some decent rides and cover a bit of distance :)

Nice one mate....here's to many more great rides.
  • It's neat to pick something you hope will feel fun and it actually be just that. I had a similar eureka moment in a test ride. I've got the Lycra now (my arse is very grateful) and I'm now after pedals and shoes. I just wish I had a bundle of dough to get kitted out like a true MAMIL!

Glad to hear your enjoying it, but I must warn you!

Road cycling can get very expensive as I have found out.

I always see something new and shiny and think, that would look good or I must have that.

Do you have any aims (Such as riding 100 miles) in mind? or did you buy the bike purely to get out and enjoy cycling?

If you enjoyed riding it alone, you've got to try riding in a group. Find a local club, ask if you can join a fun ride as a guest and beginner, see if you like it. Most clubs will let you tag along a couple of times before joining, just make sure you join the right sort of ride, you don't want to hold up a serious training run.

    Cool 8)

I too was gobsmacked at how much quicker and easier the road bike was compared to my hybrid commuter

Makes it even more enjoyable to ride though :D

Deffo look for a club and join them on some rides...great fun and the miles fly by

I got my first road bike recently too, coming from a ridiculously heavy Halfords Carrera MTB, my new Giant is a joy to ride.

I just wish i could recreate that first half a mile where it felt incredible -> after a while you get used to it!

haha! My list of new & shiny things is already taking shape, computer, saddle bag, puncture repair kit, pump, SKS race blades, bib tights, base layer, shoes, pedals, wind/water proof jacket, additional locks, lights... oh, those helmet cams look good too :)

Both really. Getting out there, enjoying cycling and getting my fitness levels up is the first thing, but joining a club (which don't take themselves too serious) is definitely something that appeals. Riding around in a pack looks great fun, and of course a club will know some fantastic routes i'm sure.

No specific milage goals (ATM), but I would love to take part in *some* sort of challenge later this year & raise a bit for charity.

The odd ride on your old bike might help to stop taking it for granted :)
