A waterproof jacket is requied -hopefully that i won't sweat too much in (using a boil in bag one at the moment). I looked at some reviews but would like some real world experiences.
I'm looking at getting an Endura Convert II Jacket. I have Endura already (base and shorts).

I like the idea that i can also use it as a gilet
Is it worth getting the Endura for £59.99

or would the Altura Attack for £98.99 be a better choice?

How waterproof do you really need it to be?

Good enough for the odd light, sometimes heavy shower, lightweight and windproof? Then pop down to TK Maxx. Can sometimes pick up stuff there that's as good as your £100 stuff for £20-ish. All depends what they've got in stock though and if you can get past the "must have this brand" snobbery factor ;)

Check out Millets too before they're gone! ;)

As a owner of the convert I would give it the thumbs up! Does the job as a waterproof but maybe not the best breathable jack out there.for the money (just over £70 I paid) it's a good investment.

as mentioned what do you want from your jacket a shower proof a light waterproof ect..

i got a endura venturi cost me £170 it waterproof is amazing it's never let up on me and i been caught in some torrential rain in the middle of nowere.. it's made out of event material which is ment to be an amazing breatherble material.. when out mtbing especially when climbing you still boil in the bag. i sweat in this jacket when pushing hard climbing ect. spend as much as you can gore seem to score amazing reviews.. endura stuff is good to i have a fair bit of it.. and altura aint bad i had their attack shorts they lasted and held up well..

i personally would go for gore if you can afford it..
  • needs to be waterproof for a full on downpour, i mainly ride up on the moors with no protection from the wind or rain. going to look at some jackets today (maybe the gore bike wear path II jacket)

I have a Gore Alp X from 2009 which I have used for my daily commute for two years. It's really light, very waterproof and as breathable as you can expect (which is never as much as you want. It was bought in the sales, so I made a good saving. In addition to that, I have a Gore Contest Windstopper which keeps out pretty much everything that the weather can throw at it and couldn't recommend it enough.

If your budget is around £100 then I think any jacket that is waterproof is going to make you sweat. Try find one with zipped vents under your arms. This area is usually sheltered a bit more from the rain so usually doesn't let too much rain in while allowing some ventilation to stop you over heating.

If you want a proper water proof jacket then £100 quid isnt going to be enough for a proper jacket, i have done a few hikes ect and found most of the typical jackets have the following problems

:too sweaty is a big issue i find with many jackets, makes you get cold chills afterwoods thus getting colder.
:too big/bad fitting, this a problem as a lot of them are like puffer jackets really not able to move very freely.

For a bike jacket i dont think you going to get a "fully" waterproof jacket, this just isnt going to happen, also just going outside in a downpoor is never a good idea, if you want to stay quote "dry", it kind of pointless going outside

Personally i think staying warm is the key, without getting the "cold chill", and thanks to advice here and from singletrack forums i decided to get a Gore Phantom jacket, i got mine for £80ish and i VERY pleased with it.

It is very good at stopping the wind, id even say 100% windstopper, rain wise i been out in some pretty raining days and it isnt 100% water proof, but it is resistant, and it doesnt feel "soaked" afterwoods, also drys very quickly.

Tbh it just a great jacket, you feel" protected" from the elements, and as it gets warmer you can remove the arms too:)

The vents on the back of the convert might let water in during an extreme downpour, but mine kept me dry yesterday during normall 'heavy' rain. I like the way you can remove the sleeves, and as I sweat like a stuck pig when cycling I'm suprised how breathable it is.

I prefer to go for the pack away style waterproofs..

I've had £250 North Face jackets that havn't kept me as dry as a £10 pack away one!

Once I'm soaked, I'm soaked. The ride is the thing. Just need change of clothes in the car and warm shower/bath/house/food plus beer to look forward to post ride.

I have a range of stuff from the cheap to the pricy, I generally just carry a cheapie, Lusso and I like my superlight Sportful which has turned out to be quite waterproof, my Altura Race Cape keeps me bone dry and very warm, what I wish is that manufacturers actually make a long rear tail to cover your backside, I mean what is the point otherwise caping up only to get a soaked backside from your rear tyre.

  • I already have a Gore Function Plus Camo Vest - really keeps the wind out.

  • what about the Berghaus Rapide. It is in the latest goretex as fabric which is meant to be as breathable of event, but is very very light. The jacket is about 220g

    what about the Berghaus Rapide.

    its a running jacket :?
  • don't be fooled into thinking it has to be just bike gear. If you have one nearby check out Go Outdoors. huge variety of stuff and unlike Blacks etc I find they actually know their stuff.

    got this recently:

yes, its not a bike jacket, and its not waterproof, but any decent waterproof jacket will cost loads. Been up Snowdon in it two weeks ago, and been biking. flexible, breathable and will take a hell of a lot of rain.....

any walking jacket with a roll away hood when cycling are great for collecting water  a few hours out in the wilds you wont stay dry if its raining.

Having owned 2 Gortex jackets sold under the same name but one marketed for walking and one for cycling the differences are longer back, no hood and longer sleeves and all for a reason.

I just worry more about staying warm, i wear a windproof/showerproof, as even a full waterproof wont keep you totally dry when on the bike
