I need HELP buying the right bike?

In the summer I will be cycling from london to paris and back. Has anyone got any advice on what sort of road bike/touring bike I will need? I'll be carrying minimal weight. I'm looking to spend between £250-£450 are there any makes of bikes or specific frame materials or components I should be looking for? and are there any decent websites to buy from?

Any info appreciated!!

    For that sort of money, you really have got to go into the 2nd hand market. For a ride like that too, i'd chose comfort over anything else. Get a bike that fits right is my main bit of advice.
