Take the old seat clamp off and look on the inside/underside. The size will almost certainly be etched on it somewhere. If it really is a 1.5 inch, then you'll need a 38.5, but the seatpost is 27.something mm so 38.5 sounds very large.

what does it say on the underside of the existing clamp?

read the how to measure ´tubes in the FAQs and I would guess it is 34.9 (35).

Whichever one is nearest to, but over, 30mm.

Just be sure you've measured it right, to the nearest 1 mm.

you have a front mech fitted to the same tube. the tube does not look like it is extrenally butted or formed in any other way.

you have there for measured not that accurately. your first guess implies 34.9mm your second implies 28.6 or 31.8(standard mech sizes).

have you read the FAQ? doing that should give you better answers than you are getting.

Probably a 30.0 then! Maybe investing in some calipers will help. Otherwise, pop in to halfords and ask, or email voodoo.

The seatpost size does not indicate the seatclamp size. 'Looks like' is not a particularly accurate way to measure something.

If I may say so myself.

I have 5 frames taking 27.2mm seatposts, one is a 28.6mm clamp (steel frame), the rest are all 31.8mm (all Merida made ally frames).

Are you measuring with a ruler or a pair of calipers, the former is a waste of time.

Bit naughty, but I have a 31.8mm QR seatpost clamp for sale, £7.50 delieverd, it's Xmission branded (Merida's in house component brand) and as new (fitted to display bike, never ridden) PM me if interested.

Only problem with Google results are the amount of random idiots posting random sh1t which may be taken as gospel.
Can't see the hardship in measuring using my patented pi method. Steak and Kidney being my favourite.

sounds like auto correct is working over time.

Enjoy your hope clamp for as long as it works.

Google is random crap of opinions and unrelated garbage from around the world and you have to take a wide selection, filter it and try to guess what's right, or get distracted by Wikipedia Wandering, lolcats, porn or end up ordering loads of unrelated bike stuff rather than solving the problem.

Threads like this are more like The Price Is Right. Random opinions that keeps going until someone gets close to the correct answer or the original poster solves the problem themselves.

Nowt wrong with Hope clamps BTW :P. The one bit of Hope bling that you really shouldn't have a problem with and seize up less than the plastic pivot seated stuff some manufacturers fit.
