Which light/strong trail wheelset for ~£500

As said need a strong but reasonably light (<1700g) wheelset for hitting Wales/Scotland/overseas trails but confused over all the options. Started looking at Easton Havens then read about all the rear hub issues they've had, so I want something reliable as well. Had a quick look at Crossmax SX didn't like the white gawdy scheme, have heard others suggest ZTR/Hope rims but I think these might be a bit heavy...
Is there such a critter I've overlooked?

What sort of trails will you be "hitting"
How heavy are you?
The obvious choice is hope hubs and the stans rims of your choice.0 -

Hopefully I won't be hitting them myself :-) but I do get up to north wales a fair bit, Coed y Brenin, Conwy, Innerleithen, Fort Bill occasionally, odd Alps trip. I won't be downhilling on them but I want them to be able to take drops of 3-4 feet, rock gardens etc.
I weigh about 180 pounds.0 -
tune hubs, flow rims, cx ray spokes, should come under £500 i think, well under 1700g!!0

I dont know which Stans Rims are which (except the flow is the heaviest/strogest, thats what I use)
Perhaps one or two down from the Flow?
It depends how smooth you are on the bike I guess, most wheels should be able to cope with the riding you're describing. I think some people tend to underestimate the amount of stick light weight stuff can take.
I'd definitely get hand builts as opposed to factory wheels though.
If you set them up tubeless then you'll save a bit more weight aswell.0 -

Fairly pointless buying Flow rims if you dont need them though (same applies to the CX ray spokes)
Tune hubs are a good shout if you want to max your budget though!0 -
I'm not really sure what is the minimum weight (in my budget) I can reliably get away with using for the riding I'm doing. I've been told I ride pretty smooth, I managed to get my 100mm down Morzine and Fort Bill in one piece, wouldn't mind a tad more travel though now :-)0

Other Q is where would I get some of these babies made up? CRC? Wiggle? Are there any recommendations for where to buy them or just hunt down the best deal? Cheers ears0

How about his for £249 for the rear?
Hope Pro 2 Evo Disc Rear 10mm Saint 32h Black
NoTubes ZTR Crest Rim 32h Black
DT Swiss Spokes Competition Stainless DB Black 2mm-1.8mm
DT Swiss Nipple Upgrade Brass Pro-lock Black Set Per Single Wheel(DH/FR/XC)
Velox Rim Tape Cloth 22mm0 -
Stans Arch is the intermediate one.
Mavic 719 a good rim too.
Or for a factory build, and decent weight:

Have you seen any at this price? linky?
Everyone has quoted me around £700 min for king/kong & Arch rims.0 -
Have a look at a2z hubs too:

Though I guess maybe too light, and qr only.0 -

yeh, I've already been looking at an X0 groupset for £800 from bike-components.de so good to know you've already used them.
One thing I have noticed though. They can't do an XT groupset cheaper than Merlin.0 -

yeah certain stuff is dead cheap, brakes being one, but the shimano groupsets arent much cheaper tbh, depends what you want, but they are just cheap in general overall.0 -
Hmm, the tune hub based deal does look pretty good too, thx Dirtydog, must drop em an email. Thx supersonic, I was looking for a mid range rim such as the Arch.
Lawman, did you have to pay any extra's when you buy from them or are duty/tax already included?0 -
