Forks - specific ish question

Hello on here :) I hope I don't bore you with too many words but have many questions so hopefully someone can help!

Right.... I'm sure there are plenty of things about forks on here but my dilema is a little more specific on my bike.

I ride a 2009 Claud Butler Olypmus Hardtail that I picked up a year old stupidily cheap so couldn't resist. It had light and infrequent use for the first year and half or so but now were riding xc several times a week. My fitness is limiting my climbing but I'm getting pretty quick downhill (nursing a sore knee after a fairly big off at cwmcarn yesturday morning, my first fall!), leg armour ordered :).

Just starting to spend some money now over the last few weeks getting the bike serviced and its in now to straighten the wheel after yesturdays fun!

I know the shock is very unwell! (Rock Shox Tora 302 U-Turn) Leaking oil from the preload adjust lockout and travel controls. It has zero damping! I had it in my head that these shocks are very poor from reading bits and pieces a year or so ago but now I've read others that say other than the weight they are great!!?? If I'm going to spend out on new (secondhand or new) shocks it will be a very limited budget of about £150. I can get mine serviced for £45 plus postage ish but have to send them back to Rock Shox (Service cannot be done by LBS?) and be without a bike for HOW LONG? So can I get anything better for £150 and have the benefit of no downtime or just save my money and be patient and get my shock serviced?

5' 11" and 14 stone if thats of any help

call TFtuned and get them serviced and maybe tuned to your weight.

Tora's are very simple to work on. Download the workshop manual, and have a look. If you grasp it, it should be a cheap satisfying diy job.

Yep, service or tf tuned and a motion control damper fitment and or air cartridge.
  • Thanks for your replies chaps. I went in to see my LBS today and he said he had had a proper chat with Rock Shox and its going to cost more like £100 plus postage for fixing and because the preload adjuster leaks they are definately the only ones who can fix? I can't see any of these parts on the website TFtuned? Only seals and spring units..

Hopefully picking up another set of Tora 302's tonight locally for £60 which are apparently in good condition and no leaks so this must be the way to go now??

  • yep will do tomorrow
  • I'm a bit confused! (no surprise!)

I just picked up the cheap set of 302's and they're in good nick it seems. They didn't have lock out though.
The ones off my bike originally, say RS on the side next to the Tora text. Can someone explain to me the various versions in order of worst to best???

    is it

    318
    302
    302 rs
    302 solo air

or is my RS (maybe read wrong) something to do with them being solo air?? The bike should have had solo air but I can't see any air connection on the fork so presumed they were not original...
  • also my original shock hasn't got v brake mounts where it seems all the others do? Or was this an option? There is nothing about them on the website.
