Brake question

Is it right that you can squeeze the brake level quite a lot (within say 1cm) of the grip before the brakes bite? I'm talking about the Avid Elixir on my new bike. Thought you would get some bite with less squeeze of the lever?

Not really but it does depend on set up.

Isn't there an adjuster on those - grub screw where the lever joins? Two in fact, one for bite point and one for reach adjustment.

Depends on the Elixir. Lower ones just have reach.

Yes its just reach on the Elixir 1. I feel a bit more assured having seen same brakes on a few more bikes at LBS today and they felt just the same.

  • Wind the adjuster almost all the way in so the lever is close to the bar, bleed the brakes, job done.
