Hi all,
I am currently running Avid Elixir R carbon hydraulic disc brakes on my boardman.
Id like to uprate my discs to either 180mm or 203mm
Any recommendations ?
Thanks
Matt

What Chunkers said. A rotor is a rotor, stupid to pay Avid prices.I don't do smileys.

But why? Still triple the price of a SS one.I don't do smileys.

just pointing out you can halve the price by at least shopping about.
asthetically the avids are more pleasing0 -
superstar rotors are slightly thicker but as good as any other rotors on the market.

Thanks all for the advice - simple upgrade to be carried out next weekBoardman pro ht 20100

When you say upgrade, are you changing the size of the rotor?
If so you'll need to change or get mount adapters for the correct size and you'll need to know what kind of mount you have and what adapter to get.
Again, Superstar do them.0 -
Hi there
Yes, im uprating from 160mm to 180 or 203mm...from checking all id need is the mount adapter to fit the rotor.
Thanks

What is the Fork? You need to make sure it can cope with a rotor upgrade0

Just buy a 180mm0

Will the 203mm not fit ?Boardman pro ht 20100

Yes it'll fit and is correct for the fork if you buy the correct bracket - but it's overkill.0

Happy days, just got the 203mm mount and 203mm disc on ebay for £18 :-)Boardman pro ht 20100

Does it?
Looks heavy to me and is for an XC bike.0 -
Boardman = XC?
Thought Boardman is mainly trails / "don't know what I'm using it for, just want to buy a bike".
Not knowing what exactly the OP has or is using it for, it could be anything, and weight difference in the rotors anyway is small. Mainly irrelevant unless you really are a weight weenie.
But yeah, I'd say it's perhaps overkill, but so long as the forks can cope with 203 then really not going to be a problem.0 -
Ill be using my boardman pro ht for trails like afan, im quite a big chap so wanted a little more safety :-)Boardman pro ht 20100

How big is "quite big". I'm about 16.5st and I'd certainly not want 200mm saucers on any of my bikes bar maybe a DH bike.
Remember bigger does not = more safety. You don't want to be touching the lever and going sailing otb. By going from 160mm to 203mm, you'll lose a fair bit of modulation.
Main question really needs to be do you have trouble with stopping/ brake fade at the moment? If so, what's causing it? what are your pads worn like? could they be contaminated? do the brakes need bleeding?
If the pads are good, brakes are bled, and you're still having problems, then I'd maybe look at going up a size. But unless you're like 20st and rocking alpine descents all day I can't see you needing dinner plates.
Oh by the way, all of the above is mainly subjective anyway. Some people actually prefer the on/off feeling you get from big rotors.0 -
The big 203 rotors are typically the kind of thing you want for big long descents where you may be cooking your brakes. The larger size dissipates heat better basically, along with less force required by the pistons to brake.
Afan - not long enough to be a problem. The Alps yes.
That said, there's no harm going big and especially if you plan an Alps trip at some point. Partly why I went 203 on mine, but it's a big AM rig suited for the Alps.
I do find there's a little bit of a noticeable difference in the braking and just lets me have a lighter touch which is great for single fingered braking.0
