Hi all.
I have a old Giant CFR3 that aside from casette (now 13-23 stock 11-24) and chain + brakepads, its pritty mutch in stock configuration (Shimano RSX groopset).
Howewer there seem to be quit some play in the rear mech/derauller, so I guess its time fro a new one.
Howewer the drivetrain use a 7 speed casette and curerrent rear derauller is a Shimano RSX sg.
As it seem there is only Deraullers for 9 and 10 speed sysetmes on the web shops and local shop sade thay aint made anymore for 7 speed, and he only had one short laying around, but it will not work for me as I have 3 front chainrings (26-36-46). My question is now, do I have to upgrade the whole divetrain? or will a 9 speed derauller do the jobb? I have only owercome one 7 speed rear derauller that is a SG, but its a werry old XT MTB derauler, and the seller is asking a lot for it.

  • I am 90% confident that your derailleur can be fixed in 5 minutes, that without seeing it... Derailleurs don't break, unless you brake them

In the case of the remaining 10%, any Shimano derailleur is likely to do the job, a 7 speed drivetrain is pretty tolerant to slight variations in the derailleur response to cable pull. If you have a triple, you need a derailleur with long cage.

    I just put a 10 speed tiagra 4600 GS on a Triple 7 speed ( £24 ) and works fine.

There's plenty of 8 speed Shimano rear mechs out there that will work fine.
Make mine an Italian, with Campagnolo on the side..
  • In case you go for a new one, can I have the "broken" derailleur? PM me if interested

    Thanks mates for the anwsers!
So I now know what to get.
And ugo.santalucia, its not broken, just has paly from wear from the years, but you can have it if you come after it, But I dont live in the UK.
  • Or you could try a Shimano Acera rear derailleur, I think there's 2 on ebay at the moment and they usually go for less than £12. I should know as I was going to sell mine, which is also part of an RSX groupset, but it's been so good I'd rather keep it for a winter bike then give it away. As long as you don't mind a mountain bike cassette I think it would work with a triple, and ever given me any trouble.
