What options are there for some budget aero clincher wheels?
[Shimano]

So far I've looked at:

Planet X for £400
http://www.planet-x-bikes.co.uk/i/q/WPP ... r_wheelset

Shimano RS50 C50 for £600

any others? Easton EA90 Aero?

    I quite fancy these

Can't comment on quality. Claimed weight of 1523 ? ? maybe a little optimistic.

That shimano deal is good though.
  • I think Planet X have those shimano RS80 deep sections for £500 at the moment.

If it's just for TT's then why clinchers? Why not go for tubs and get the advantage of lighter weight?

Yep, if its purely for TT's then you cant really beat planet x 82/101s
  • My mate bought the shimanos from planet x saw them today they look the part and got a brilliant write up in jan cycling plus, can't go wrong with the price as well.
  • Digs under the coffee table....

Thats true, 4 stars 'Built stiff, but feel lively in a sprint and climb very well too.' I know reviews mean nothing but considering that the rrp is listed as £849.99, gotta be a bargain surely?

I've got 58mm carbon clinchers from the USA and weighed the pair at 1548g on the company digital post scales without skewers (as those appear to be) so quite realistic. Some really light skewers would be around 45g extra

How are you getting on with these? Worth the money/risk?

they will be primarily for the TT but will also be used afterwards as 'good' wheels for non-mega-hilly rides/sportives, so tubs are a no-no.

Been very happy with my DA 7850SL wheels so I'll probably go for the RS80 C50s I think, unless something pops up to persuade me otherwise.

    Eh up,

If you search my posting history you can read about my 50mm Gigantex carbon clinchers on Superlight hubs with Sapim CX Ray spokes. Wheelsmith hand builds them, just a bit over your budget at £680 delivered but they are absolutely fantastic, I can't recommend them or him highly enough. They are very light and incredibly strong and firm, read about my meeting with a road full of potholes at 45mph+ when I thought I had smashed them up...but there was absolutely no damage and they were still true! Brilliant wheels for price. Add a nice set of decals off eBay and they look the mutts too!

    Hi
My wheels are from Boyd Cycling in the USA rather than the ebay listed ones direct from China. Boyd uses a Taiwanese rim and his own custom hubs and then builds them up in the USA with Sapim spokes. Brilliant wheels and i was amazed just how little they are affected by side winds. As you can probably tell - i love them. Very stiff, come with rim specific pads included, spare parts are cheap (freehub was $30 and 4 pads was $15 when i switched to Campag). The stickers arent laquered over so can be peeled off if you dont like them.

Cost came to £720 for mine when i bought mine in the summer (including delivery and import taxes/vat).

What are those Fuerte Bici 50/38mm clinchers like 500 or 475 seems reasonable.

    now then

    new RS80s C50 for £500, or
s/hand but mint Mavic Cosmic Carbone SL for just a teeny bit more...?

Similar weights, steel bladed spokes, straight pull rear driveside.

have gone for the RS80s in the end :D

I generally prefer Shimano over Mavic so that made the difference in the end.
