Camping

Is this now to be included with cycling in the fashionably popular, let's milk it category? Thought I'd have 3 days in the new forest over the bank holiday, just me, the wife and dog in a 3 man tent. £80, or should I say £79.70 to be exact. Is this the going rate these days? No electric or facilities other than toilets/showers that i can determine, so just a field basically. Admittedly, I haven't camped in the Uk for a bit so maybe it's the norm. Just wondering....

That seems dear to me, we go camping a lot.
we tend to go to st davids in wales, £10 a night or £15 a night with electric.
the campsite we use is amazing.
excellent shower and toilet blocks. extremely clean and well kept.
Incredible scenery and one of the best beaches in europe ( apparently )

That's about right for one of the posh sites. You're not wrong about it stinging, though.
There are cheaper sites around - stayed at 2 in Snowdonia last year which were something like £8 a night for me & my son.0 -
Nice site, Fort William, last year: £18 per night 2 + dog. August.0

Camping is shi_t. No-one can deny it. I've done enough camping in my (short) time.
Thing is, you can still have fun whilst camping and you usually do things you don't usually do (get your head round that!) which is always entertaining and usually results in some pretty good stories. How this then get's romanticised by middle-class dicks who want to appear 'down to earth' by going camping one year (literally) is beyond me.

Here here!
Humans have, over millennia, used our ingenuity, logical skills and mental dexterity to invent and develop fantastic technologies. These include indoor plumbing and waste disposal, hot water boilers, showers, beds and gas cookers. Why anyone would give all of these up and pay 20 quid in return for a sh!t night's sleep in the damp corner of a muddy field with a 5 minute walk to the toilet in the p!ssing rain escapes me. The only excuse for camping is when there are no hotels within 3 hour's drive, or if you're on the run....Head Hands Heart Lungs Legs0 -
OP, that sounds extortionate! Can I ask which campsite you used? Although I reckon I already know the answer...
We stopped over at a campsite in Aix Les Bains while watching last year's Tour - our massive motorhome just fitting the plot, electric hookup, showers, washing-up facilities, emptying point all in the price. 15Euros. But it's what a lot of people do in France and it's what a lot of people always have done and I think it's funded differently.
It is becoming very "fashionable" over here and campsites are milking it: a few couples we know were camping for a few nights up near Whitby. My better half was busy writing her MSc dissertation, so I had a weekend back "home" and thought I would join them camping for one of the nights. As I pulled up [in my tiny Mazda], the guy on the gate asked us to let reception know about the extra car against our tents - for security/insurance reasons. So I did so... and the cheeky fuckers took £8 off me. No extra tent, tiny MX5 and probably a few litres of water to brush my teeth/have a rinse the next morning.
Middlewood Farm Holiday Park. Shame about the extortion because it's a lovely site.Ben

Has anyone thought about asking Elton John about camping?
Can we fix it?
Yes we can!0 -

+1 to this.
Have been on quite a few camping holidays with wife and kids, and whilst enjoyable, (apart from 1 trip to Snowdonia on a site full of scousers singing until 2am), its always a lot of hard work also - packing car - putting tent up - keeping warm and dry - cooking and washing pots etc. It aint that low cost either.
So for the last 2 years we have decided our summer holiday will never again involve kagoules, and packing huge amounts of sh1te, and potwashing in a communal sink, and will most definitely involve a villa with pool, sunshine and sea and air travel and restaurants and real beds. And its been fantastic.0 -
I really like the idea of camping, but the reality regularly fails to live up to my plans/expectations. Especially the shared showers/toilets. People seem to think that you can have lower standards because you're sleeping unter canvas.
I sold my tent earlier this year because I didn't think I'd use it again.0 -
I remember being quoted £50 per night(1 tent,1 car,2adults,2children) to camp in Scotland.
I told the lady onthe phone that it sounded a tad expensive."Oh but the Open Golf Championship is on"came the reply.(It was 15 miles away at Carnoustie).I asked her if that was the All Inclusive price, cue uncomfortable silence followed by "I take it that you won't be staying with us".
I told her that her intuition was only surpassed by her greed.0 -
we really enjoy camping,
Not just doing the things we dont do other times, but the whole experience.
My children are 7 and 4 and they absoloutey love it .
they get so excited sleeping in the tent. our tent isnt damp, we have a heater so its not cold.
the children are free to run around and enjoy the open spaces. Its just one big adventure.0 -

It was Hollands wood. Not been there before, but they have 600 pitches, so £48,000 if they fill them with people like me over the bank holiday
We used to go to Hollands Wood for family holidays and loved it. But I recall my parents telling me some family friends had been with their little lad (so like the next family generation keeping the tradition ) and it had been ridiculously priced.
Such a shame because the setting is lovely. At that price, you could stay at the Cloud Hotel in Brockenhurst.
Btw. I did know the answer!Ben
