7 speed Carrera Subway

Quick question. A mate is changing his rear wheel on a 7 speed Subway. He has bought an 8 speed freewheel. Can you space this or not. Is 7 just for 7 and 8 just for 8 etc?

    Assuming the current wheel is cassette and not screw on freewheel, he can fit the 7sp cassette using a spacer (few quid off fleabay).
