    ghoti is pronounced 'fish'

    gh sounds like F as in enough
    o sounds like I as in women
    ti sounds like SH as in petition

    I honestly don't see what's so difficult to pronounce, if English is one's Mother Tongue. For a foreigner learning, though, it must be a bloody nightmare.

  • There was a small piece in the new scientist this week about the english language. Apparently the english language is easy to learn because it has so few rules - but paradoxically this makes it hard to teach as there are so few rules.

    Anyway, the sami people have over a hundred words for snow - go on twitter (140 wd limit) and ask them to describe wintry white stuff - it drives them apoplet, apoplep, mad.
