How many gears can I get this mech to work over?

I have this old LX rear mech

and I want to use it on a weird bike i am building up. I also have some Dura ace 10 speed bar end shifters to use with it but I am unsure of the cassette that i can get away with?

I think it was an 8 speed mech. Am I right? I also think I can maybe even get it to work on a 10 speed cassette with these dura ace shifters. What do you reckon? How many sprockets will it cover?7

Cheers

Matt

It will easily cover 9 as they are th same as 8spd.

As the road ten speed cassettes hang into the wheel it should cover that. BUT the mech cage side plates is a lot thicker than more recent mechs do you could have spoke contact depending on wheel size.

Only other comment I'd add to Nick's is that if it doesn't work you'll need a 9 speed MTB mech (or any Shimano road mech) to work with 10 speed road shifters. 10 speed MTB mechs are incompatible.
