Interchangeability of SIS deraileurs (8sp/9sp)

I've just been given a pristine Shimano Alivio rear mech that came off a hybrid with an 8-speed cassette. I thought it would come in handy as a spare to keep me mobile if I ever break mine, but am I expecting too much in thinking it would be a straight swap onto my bike and it would work with a 9-speed cassette? Or to put it another way, is this Alivio mech going to work perfectly well in place of an SLX mech when it's being moved by a 9-speed SLX shifter? It might never come to it, but I'd be a bit annoyed to find I'd kept this thing in a drawer for years and it didn't do what I wanted it to . . .

It won't work..... It would run on 7/8speed but it won't mesh right on a 9speed set up!0
