Fixing rear mech play? UPDATED

Iv been unable to get the indexing on my gears spot on which is not normally a problem.
Today i discovered there is a noticeable amount of lateral movement on the pivot connecting upper to the lower cage where the spring is housed. Iv look it apart to service it but still has noticeable play in it which i suspect is affecting shifting.

Is there any way to solve this or is it a new mech time, the upper mech is about 4 years old and the lower is 2 years old?

Thanks.

Either the pivot pin or bore is worn, you need to replace the worn bit! (You've not given us much to go on, like make, model etc) But given the age I'd say a new rear mech is on the cards. You can't split most mechs anyway.

Sorry forgot to mention its an xt mech m770 9 speed.

The pin is fairly new as i snapped the original mech on the bike so had to fit an old one but used the good bottom half of the new one on the old mech if that makes sense.

Gonna try the old one see if that's any different.

    Thanks

To save making a new post ill ask on here.

If i get a new mech would a medium cage work and have any benefits?

I run a 32-22 up front and a 34-11 at the back giving me 33T using the equation cap req'd (T) = (BIG ring - small ring) + (BIG cog - small cog).

This puts me border line between mech lengths i think. Would i have any chain length issues in 32-11?
