so, i have wrote off a mavic cosmic elite rim /most spokes in a crash but the hub is still working great
i've decided i would like to build it up with another 30 mil deep alloy rim but don't know which one to go for .also i don't know which brand spokes to go for so if anybody has any advice it would be much appreciated .
this wheel would be used mostly for racing crits so i don't need anything super strong or heavy and my budget is pretty low as im a youth A funding my riding on my Saturday job :) so could probably spend 80- 100 quid on the rim plus spokes
thanks in advance

What's the spoke count? Are they straight-pull spokes or J-bend?

  • Pop down to a good bike shop that builds wheels in your area.
  • spoke count is 20, and they are bladed straight pull spokes at the moment

I think finding a 20 hole alloy rim will be your challenge. Apart from Velocity Deep Vees, plus you can't get Kinlin in the UK. For spokes, your budget won't allow you to stretch to bladed spokes, so DT or Sapim double butted.
Make mine an Italian, with Campagnolo on the side..

DT Swiss do a few 20 hole alloy rims as well IIRC.

DT RR585 comes in 20 hole http://www.dtswiss.com/Products/Components/Rims/RR-rims/RR-1-2-black.aspx and costs around £60.

Wheelsmith uses the IRD Aero 30 http://www.interlocracing.com/rims.html but I don't know anywhere that sells them as seperates.

I can't think of any other options you can source easily in the UK (i.e. Kinlin).

I'd talk to the LBS and see which they can source then see if they can get hold of spokes that will work, I suspect this is where you'll struggle.
  • Stans no tubes do 20 hole rims. Bit pricey though but very light.

Contemplating a new wheelset using these myself.

I'd forgotten about the Stans 340.

Only concern I'd have with that though is that from what I've read it's a little too light for it's own good so can be a pain to build and works better if you add 4 spokes per wheel compared to a more normal weight rim. Not going to say it's a bad rim but you'll need to be a very light rider to get away with a 20 hole rim (even on the front).

I rode 20 hole rims for 2 years and they only went slightly out of true once. I'm not particularly careful and I'm 12 stone...
