Hiya

Bearings sounded a bit rough in rear wheel yesterday so decided to replace them (my first attempt of doing something like this).
I have followed the Zinn road bike maintenance book but i cant figure out how tight the cones should be done up.
Can someone tell me??
Is there a trick to getting it right? or is it trial and error?

Thanks

Well done for having a go :)
It is a bit of trial and error i'm afraid, tighten the cone and locknut and test by waggling the axle.
If too tight the axle will feel stiff to turn.
If too loose the axle will wobble side to side.
There should be just the tiniest amount of sideways play which is taken out when the wheel is fitted and the QR done up.

I get the final tightness right by placing one cone wrench on a cone and the other on the locknut at the other end of the axle and tighten by about 1/32 of a rotation. If I need to back off, I move the wrench from locknut to the cone and back it off. This will adjust and tighten a bit at the same time.
If you loosen the locknut, adjust the cone and retighten the locknut on the same side, its hard to get the fine tuning exact.

Also, you want them very slightly loose as the quick release fractionally compresses the hub and tightens them a bit. Definitely a trial and error effort I am afraid!

so i replaced the bearings and was quite happy with what i have done albeit still slightly concerned about whether the cone was done up enough or too much. it feels silky smooth though.
thing is the old bearings werent in bad condition when i looked at them. And when i put the wheel back on the bike and span it there was a kind of clicking noise. i know its not the bearings now (unless i have f'd up) so what else could it be?
