Hi folks, dont know if anyone has had the same experience but its happened to mine for the second time. I had the 10 speed Record chainset a couple of years ago and after a very short time i noticed the top coat of whatever it is bubbling away on the large chainring from the teeth and inwards. I returned it to the shop and they replaced the ring through Campagnolo in the uk, they also gave me a spare. I sold the old one and recently put the spare one on another chainset and on inspection the same thing is happening. Any ideas as to what the problem is? Im not saying the latest bike is always dried off etc but the old one was on my best bike and never saw the wet?

I've had/got three Record UT chainsets and they have all suffered from the same flaking of the special plating they use.

Plating on aluminium is unusual, much more commonly anodised or hard anodised, which wears in a quite different way.

To be honest, it's not really an issue, just live with it, it won't do anything any harm.

It's a hard anodising coating and if the chemical process isn't right it will simply flake off. Rings might wear a bit quicker but shouldn't affect function for quite a while.
Make mine an Italian, with Campagnolo on the side..
