Garmin edge 500

As a very late member of the computer age Mr Claus popped one of these in my stocking at Christmas. To say I am impressed is an understatement I have even managed to download rides to the garmin site. One thing however is puzzling me and try as I may I don't seem to be able to do it. When I am wearing the heart rate monitor strap Its picking up the signal cos its showing up on the graphs I download but is there any way I can set the actual monitor so I can read my heart rate as I am riding.
I'm sure someone on this site will be able to help me. Thanks in anticipation.

Any way, the guy says he's not technologically minded. I imagine the manual may as well be written in Chinese to him. He's just asking for a bit of help. No need to be such a knob.
  • Yup read the manual page 37 thanks. Just a little bit of information overload for me. It would be nice to have had the heart rate a bit bigger though. Will continue to experiment.

MattC59 You dont happen to ride sportives do you?

Jesus, wind your necks in, and don't be so sensetive !!!
RTFM is a common enough abreviation, it doesn't mean I'm having a go !!

how many data fields do you have on each screen ? you can have up to 8 or as few as 1, if you only have one and set it to heart rate it'll be the full size of the screen.

good choice. Not sure on the 500 but my 305 has different size fields, so if that does and it suits your set up, then stick HR in the larger field.

  • Thanks for the replies,I just need to keep playing with it. Ideally I would like heartrate and speed showing.
Regards the sportive question its just that I've come across some absolute dickheads riding sportives .

Dont forget you can set up three screens so play around with it, and as already said use fewer data fields to make the chosen ones bigger

So, Johndoran, let me get this straight......

It's acceptable to use MTFU on thiis forum with out causing offence, but it is not acceptable to use RTFM ?
I assume by your comment that it's also acceptable to call someone a dickhead, despite them already stating that they weren't having a go at you ?

Just to be clear as to why I wrote RTFM.
As the manual for the Edge500 gives extremely clear, step by step instructions (and let's be honest, a nutless monkey could understand them) on how to customise your data fields, including what data can be shown in those data fields, I think it fair to assume one of the following:

    Either:
    1) You had not read the manual.
    2) you're an idiot.

I assume you're not an idiot, and as the manual is so clear, must therefore assume number 1.

    Your original question asks:
" is there any way I can set the actual monitor so I can read my heart rate as I am riding ?"
As the manual is so clear in it's instruction, I think it's fair to assume that you hadn't read the manual.

If you're asking questions on the operation of your Edge500, with out reading the manual, then my previous statement stands, and I believe is fair.

Matt - Guess the issue may have been that someone had already said that.

    John:
    - Press & Hold Page/Menu > to bring up the menu
    - Settings
    - Bike Settings
    - Data Fields
    - Page 1
    - Enter, Reduce No. Fields to "2"
    - Enter, Scroll to "Heart Rate", Enter
    - Lap/Reset > To move to 2nd field
    - Enter, Scroll to "Speed", Enter
    - Back, Back, Back, Back.

You can set up Pages 2 & 3 with other useful stuff. I would include Time, Time of Day & Distanc & also like a page of averages (Spd, Pwr, HR).
    Rich
  • Rich thanks for that will follow it to the letter ( I hope).
My original post was on the Road Beginners page. I am sure that pretty well any advice asked for could be answered by "read the f*****g manual", even if, to those that know, the answer would be blindingly obvious .
So I stand by my assumption that anyone who answers a polite request for advice with "Read the F*****g manual" is indeed a dick head.

To those who read the manual it's blindingly obvious, beginner or not.
Actually, in light of your above post, I'll change my original assumption.

Did you read the manual or not ?
If you did, why are you asking the question, the manual is very easy to follow.
If not, why not ? Are you the idiot I previously mentioned.

You have my apologies, I was unaware that beginners (though your racing suggests you're not) couldn't read manuals.

  • Irrespective of whether I read the manual or not (which I did but it still left me a bit confused) the fact that you chose to reply in such a foul mouthed way says a lot more about you than it does about me.
That really is the sort of thing a schoolboy would do. Perhaps you are one?
    Thats it from me now.

Actually, if you read my post, (perhaps you did, but like the incredibly simple to understand manual, you didn't understand it) you'll have noticed that I wrote RTFM. Had I wanted to be foul mouthed and offensive I'd have written:
"READ THE F*CKING MANUAL you dick !!!" and judging from your subsequent posts, that may have been more appropriate.

As you understood what RTFM means, then I would assume that you also understand the context that it is generally used in.

Can I suggest that if you intend to use the forum, you try not to be so sensitive and jump to conclusions.

Can I also suggest that if you're offended by RTFM you don't use this forum, as you're going to be offended on a daily basis by far worse than that.

I would suggest that you refrain from posting in an offensive manner. It is totally unnecessary as is repeating a post I made less than 40 min previously. I assume that you just want us all to see what a knowledgeable and with-it guy you are. icon_rolleyes.gif

    Unbelievable.

A guy asks for a little bit of help on a beginners forum and in a few short posts we end up here.

Matt, I think the phrase you're looking for is 'I apologise'.

It suprised me as well Jim. I was suprised that anyone would get offended over such an abreviation in a forum where people are regularly told to MTFU, and it's not expected that they'll get offended, hence my second post stating that I wasn't having a go (that'll be the one before John infered that I was a dickhead, and before I stated that I didn't think that he was an idiot (admitedly I changed my mind), and before the name calling started).

    But, you have my apologies.
I also apologise for repeating something that had already been posted, and I look forward to everyone elses apologies for doing the same

  • WIll the Edge 500 work using an indoor Turbro Trainer? Or do I need to take it outside and use the GPS on the actual road?

I ask because, sometimes I am not able to get on the bike until 11:00 PM and don't think it's safe to be out at night when bars are still open.

Could the Edge still register all aspects of its capabilities without the GPS functionality?

    Thanks.

On my edge 800 (and I'd guess its the same on the 500) if you re on a "page with numbers" and you press and hold a box (for some time) it will allow you to select the option you want to view there. Not so easy when riding but while you re at a traffic light it works OK

Yes. You need to be using GSC10 or other Ant+ wheel/cadence sensor. You should also switch the GPS off or you will get some very strange tracks as the GPS struggles to hold a lock indoors. One of my turbo sessions attached.
