Hi guys,

so Im using my MTB to commute to work, 20 mile round trip and would like some advice on choosing budget road tyres.

Please recommend me some, Ive only really heard good reviews about continental and schwalbe marathon tyres but Im on a budget so buying new tyres with tubes is a bit costly.

Reason for budget is Im saving for another bike and will get extra kit with it but need something to get me through for the next say 6-8 weeks.

thanks in advance.

  • If you are going to continue using the mtb for commuting even after you get the new bike, buy good tyres. You don't necessarily need new tubes as well, depending on exactly how small you go. I'd say get decent tyres off the bat, rather than spending cash on some cheap ones now and buying new ones in 2 months.

    Thanks MM.

I wont be using the MTB for commuting, the bike Im saving for is a road bike so that will be the commuter. Decided to get a road bike since my commute alone is 110 miles pw, then use the MTB, with current tyres which are in good nick on weekends for fun.

The CJ's are good, also consider the WTB Slickasauris, lighter and faster rolling, will take a higher pressure and are only a little dearer.

    Hi guys,

Ive put some Schwalbe City Jet tyres on the MTB and commuted into work today, 10 mile with some steep hills.

What a difference! Ride is less demanding and Ive taken a few minutes off usual time.

Im not a very experienced rider but for those noobs on a budget, these are an awesome choice.

I've got 2 brand new Continental Double Fighter II's you can have for cheap if you want some more for next/spares. 3 months old and never used.

Roughly £16 each new, yours for £20 for both inc postage?

    PM if you want them

    +1 for the City Jets!
Had these before and they were fantastic. Never had a puncture and they lasted for ever. If you hunt round fleabay you can normally find a pair for £20.

Another +1 for city jets. Have been using them for about a year now. Cost £12 each off CRC so cheap, grip well and haven't really worn at all considering i did getting on for 1000 miles on then last year.

City Jets are really popular! On the Manchester to Blackpool Christies ride the last 2 years you would be suprised at the number of city jets on mountain bikes for the event! Even saw a set of 1.5's on an old Demo with Monsters on it!
