Pedal query

This may be a stupid question but I currently have "normal" Shimano SPD pedals fitted (i.e without a platform around them.) However having just subscribed to WMB I got some free Shimano trail SPD pedals which have the platform around them. What difference will this make to riding if any? and what are the pros and cons of changing to them (if any). I use Mavic Pulse shoes if this makes any difference!
The new pedals seem to get great reviews in the mags so am interested to know what difference they will offer.
Cheers

if the shoes are poor and flexz then the cage and give a bit of "suport".
some people find that when they miss clip in they have a bit more "help".
otherwise they can get in the way."Do not follow where the path may lead, Go instead where there is no path, and Leave a Trail."

Thanks for that Nicklouse.
Think I may just stick with my current set up then!0 -
i found having the cage not only give a little support but if the going get tough and techniclal and you feel the need to unclip you could and ride with one foot clipped and one foot out using the cage for grip and support...
that was of course untill i put propper pedals on my bike which are flat...

I had wondered about them offering support when unclipped as i sometimes need to on some of the rockier stuff around my way. (probably classed as a wimp now!)
Have you just set off the flat vs spd debate  ha-ha.0 -
I prefer caged pedals, as it offers more of a platform to put the feet on.Never had any problems with them getting in the way either.0
