I'm flying to Italy with family and MTB in t'summer and want to know if anyone has found any ingenious ways of keeping the hire car costs cheap. To get the bike inside the car with a family of 4 plus baggage will require a rather large vehicle (probabably a 4x4 or people carrier) which will add a few hundred pounds to a two week hire. Is there anyway of getting the bike on the outside of a car - any hire companies whoi hire cycle racks? Take my own lightweight strap-on cycle carrier - is there such a thing? Any ideas warmly welcomed!

ask for a car with a roof rack, take the bike in a bike bag, strap it to said roof rack.

it obviously takes a bit of assembly etc if you're moving around a lot, but that's one solution :D

I was wondering whether a Saris Bones Solo car cycle carrier might be light enough and small enough to take on the plane?

Any idea how big/heavy they are?
