bottom brackets

I think this is s stupid question - but I will carry on regardless........

Are bottom brackets interchangable? i.e if i currently have a 68mm shell with a cartridge BB can I exchange this for an external BB? Disregarding the italian/english conundrum.

In a nutshell, no.

A crankset needs a specific BB standard.

But as at as the frame goes yes.

perfect thanks - so as long as I get cranks with BB (compatible with 68mm shells) then I am a happy bunny. Time for the garage me thinks

Well they fit ether 73 or 68 mm BBs so read the manual and Parktools.
