Delamere forest. (first time)

I have managed to persuade my brother to come for a ride this week for the first time since he had surgery. He hasn't ridden in about 3 or 4 months so his fitness levels aren't going to be great. I figure Delamere Forest is a good option rather than venturing into the peaks and putting him off cycling for another few months, also it will also be a change of scenary for me as well since I have never been. With the added convenience of being easy to get to by train from Stockport.
I was just wondering what the conditions are like? I was in the Goyt Valley last week and it was pretty goopy in places, reminding me I should probably stick winter tyres on.
Also any tips? I figured I would just see how he gets on and then maybe dive off the main route, just wondering how easy it is to find ourselves on some decent singletrack.
Cheers

Well, was interesting...pretty much all the tracks (at least the ones I found) off of the main routes and fire roads were stop start because the trees seem to have lost all their branches in the wind and shed them across the paths. Getting branches caught in your wheels or worse, in your face is not an amazing experience.
Some pretty boggy sections as well, swamping your rear mech boggy that is. So I'm pretty glad I put winter tyres on and I was extremely impressed with them as well, Bontrager Mud-X. I have seen them recommended a number of times but it was the first time I was used them myself. Progressive when sliding and good traction.
Generally it was an ok day out.
Definately need to know some decent routes though to make it more enjoyable but it worked ok as a means to drag along someone who hasn't done exercise in a while.0 -
If you can get out at night, there are a few organised rides. Have a look on singletrack for the Monday night ride, and I think there is one on a Wed or Thurs from the bike shop. If you can get along you will get to know where the best trails are (which there are plenty) Glad you enjoyed it.
