Which rear mech?

My Shimano Alivio rear mech is at the end of it's life, theres more free-play in every direction than you'd care to imagine, the jockey wheels are dead and it's just not coping with life very well.
Looking on the 'bay to find a replacment I'm just wondering what I can replace with. It's an 8 speed back end, are all the 7/8/9 speed rear mech's the same?
How about something like this with a set of new jockey wheels in?

Cheers!

That looks nasty, and decent new jockey wheels will cost you £10 plus for a set. (Note his link to Wiggle, they don't actually have both in stock)(it's also not an SLX, it's an LX)
If the Alivio was ok for you then this

Nice new Deore for the same price as the old one plus new jockeys

Or a bargain new LX (although I can't see a guide wheel - you may want to ask)

If your bike is currently an 8-speed, it means it has an 8-speed cassette. This has to match the mech so an 8-speed mech would be needed unless you're planning on changing the cassette. And I'm assuming you have shimano shifters so a shimano rear mech is needed.0 -

Only thing that has to be adequate is the total capacity, but a long cage will work for all.I don't do smileys.
