in the process of looking at forks for my Cotic ive recently ordered, i was looking at either a Sektor RL solo air at 150mm or the more lighter trail oriented Reba RLT at 120mm, both can take my hopes no problems the other choice was a 2011 marzocchi 44 Micro ti with the 15mm axle this can drop to 130mm travel with the supplied spacer.

any other options for a good for up to £500?

oh yeah most of my riding is done over at cannock trail centre on Follow the Dog and the monkey

cheers

    Revelations. No Contest.

Get on Merlin now, as they have the 12% off deal they work out to £308 (for the black - you ordered a gritstone bfe iirc.) For a blue bfe, has to be white forks - check out the link in my sig.

A reba sounds ideal, the Cotics tend to run best with about 120mm of travel (I prefer mine with a bit less though)

150mm on a hardtail for xc riding - pointless.

Reba on a burly am frame is an odd combo. I'd say the frame was the wrong choice if it is just xc riding.

Rebas are fine if you're a smooth rider, but yes, they'd be more suited to a Soul for sure.

An ideal choice for the BFe is probably a Sektor or Pike, just make sure you get an adjustable travel fork. Cotics dont ride very well at all with 150mm of travel

I run a BFe with a coil Lyrik - IMO a very good combo

I also have a Soul with a 20mm coil Sektor (more of an all day, trail setup) and the difference is pretty obvious - the Sektor is nowhere near as stiiff/burly. The same will apply to a Revelation, as they are a very similar fork in terms of stiffness.

I'd say, for a BFe being ridden hard (and only you can judge this...) you should look at Pike or above in terms of toughness. Revs/Sektors will be fine but the frame can take more. Like I said, it just loves the Lyriks :D

Maybe if you like smash up climbs and mince down the descents, that might be the case. However I'm pretty sure the BFe was designed with around 120-160mm travel in mind, and would probably handle superbly with a 150mm fork. In which case, you bought the wrong frame if you want a short travel fork and a steep head angle.

Theres too many "probably's" and "pretty sures" in your post - which sounds to me like you've never ridden one for any period of time.

The geometry is the same as the Soul - The sweet spot is 120mm. They dont ride uphill well at all with 150-160mm.

Why would I have bought the wrong frame? Suggest me some other frames that can handle the abuse the BFe can do, yet come in a large size and have similar geometry?

ok, the BFe WAS designed for up to 160mm forks, and as such, should handle fairly well with them. Some of us don't mind the front wheel wandering a little on climbs, simply because it's a bit of a non-issue, and some of us like a nice slack head angle, which you're not going to be able to achieve with a short travel fork.
There are plenty of frames out there that have similar geo to the BFe and can handle a similar amount of abuse, if not more.
However what I find strange is that you claim to have bought the frame as it's so tough and can handle a lot of abuse, and then put a short travel XC fork on there, that really can't handle that much abuse (skinny, lightweight, i would assume QR dropouts...) see what I'm getting at? If you're going to put a fork like that on there, you might as well go for a skinny lightweight frame as well.

  • The Soul is over 1lb lighter than the BFe, so if running shorter forks would have been the better option.

The only real reason to go for the BFe would be to run 150-160mm forks...

Revelations would be the better all round choice for the BFe, dual position air would give the best of both worlds.
  • Thanks guys Ive ordered the Bfe and a set of revelations as I know deep down the 1st twitch of downhill and I'm gone :)
