M&S won't cover the flat we've just moved in to, apparently it's a flood risk area, so I'm now having to find another contents insurance plan which also covers bikes.

I've looked in to standalone bicycle insurance but it's almost £200 per year for a £2k full suss!

Any suggestions folks?

Most insurers use the same software for flood areas.

They do but its how they rate that data, some insurers will take the risk on, depending on how much of a risk some may charge the earth for it or they could just ignore it.

On the flood risk, I ended up with Nationwide as they were doing the assessment differently. Most just worked off postcode and won't cover or ask a fortune if you are anywhere near somewhere that has flooded even if your property is not at risk. Nationwide basically said fine based on the property not having been flooded (across the road has though) and I'm in top floor flat.

I need to reassess the bike cover. It was a couple of grand I think for general away from home cover and that could include bikes, though they also had specific cover available for bikes. May be the individual item limit is not enough for an expensive bike.

Weigh it up though with the cost of the premiums and think about how much you are likely to get your bike nicked. Once every 10 years? How much would you save up in that time if you didn't pay the extra premium and would you rather the money was in your account that you could use should it not get nicked or theirs which is going doing the drain if it's not nicked?

Don't know about the flooding issue but my home insurance is with the AA and they cover bikes up to £1k free and not much extra if you need to top up the cover

Other thing to check is whether they'll cover self builds or bikes that have had upgrades. I've heard that some can be picky or won't cover if any part is removable.

Or more, not just what they say they'll cover, but do they actually pay out in practice.

Paying 23.49 for buildings and contents. Covers 2 named bikes and plus other total contents up to value of 40k. This is for a 2 bed mid terrace cottage that is in a flood risk area according to EA but in reality is about 10m higher than normal river levels.
Not sure if this is a good deal but when it comes to insurance I get a price of the web and then haggle... You'd be amazed what you can get!
  • AA Home ins cover bikes, might want to give them a call. I am with them and they have been great.

I'm with M&S (on the older none restricted policy) but Budget seem a good alternative I did a quote the other day as moving house and just to see if cheaper and they were slightly so not bothering to change but will cover bikes over £350 fairly cheaply just have to name them.
