New year, new wheels. Advice please

Morning All

Its time to replace my Crossrides as I want to get a lighter set of tubeless wheels on my Heckler. I dont do any big jump freeride type stuff just the odd hop & pop while out on my local trails and a few trips to wales each year. Currently my forks are still QR but I'm hoping to change later in the year to 15mm so a convertible front hub is in order.

I know that Hope/Flows are popular choices but cant find the weight for these. The Crests are lighter but is there a weight limit of them, I'm 13st FWIW.

CRC have Sun Black Flag Pro's which tick the boxes but I cant get past the gold hubs and nipples and the Chargers are nearly the same weight as my Crossrides.

What about a set of Shimano XT wheels but I dont think the front hubs can be converted?

Budget of around £2-250, what do people recomend?
Wow great ship man. Looks like a fish, flies like a fish, steers like a cow.

I fancy a set of these myself and they seem to fit your requirements: http://superstar.tibolts.co.uk/product_ ... ee6011f268
  • I cant seem to find one on the Stans site but is there a weight limit on the Crest rims?

  • If you have any doubts about the crest rims just read Guys reveiw.

Oh and winstanly bikes are doing these on hope pro2 evo's for £264, now thats a bargain.

I'd been looking for a set of second hand hope hoops but i might just strech the extra sheckles for these.
Never argue with an idiot, he'll only drag you down to his level and beat you with experience.
  • Hmm so Crests are stronger then they would seem which is good to know. Have you got a link to them on Winstanely for £264 as I cant see them?

    I'm very tempted by the Superstar/Crest at a bargain-tastic £220.

Consider the XT wheelset at Merlin too.
  • The problem with the XT sets is the front hub arent interchangeable. As I said I'll be going over to a 15mm set of lowers later in the year so I'd have to buy a new hub and then pay to have it swapped.

you buy front and rear wheel sepearte through winstanleys. thats where mine came from. extra £40 odd quid over the superstar 1's but IMO you get better hubs with the Hope Pro 2 Evo's. im sure many will disagree though.

oh and you get that superb clicking noise when you freewheel!!

Are the hope hubs thought to be better than the superstar (nukeproof) switch hubs?

I'd be happy with either as my first gen swith hubs are going strong, the rims are just getting old.

Are the Switch & Nukeproofs the same then?

I'd love to get some coloured Pro II's but the best I can find is £320 which is well over my budget.

From what I can tell looking at the hub spares, but can't be 100%. The grips look very similar ;)

Pro 2's on Flows from Merlin around £250
Tomac Synper 140 Giant XTC Alliance 1
If the world was flat, I wouldn't be riding !
  • Can't see Pro2/Flows at Merlin for £250. AFAIK tho they work out a similar weight to my current wheels. Going on reviews the Crests are good for how I ride the question now is Hope or Superstar hubs.

Both have changable hub options which is what I wanted but the SS are cheaper (& quieter) then the Hopes which would leave some spare pennies towards a new cassette and chain. Do the SS builds come with stans rim strips?

  • Does anyone know the weight of a Pro2 Evo/Crest wheelset as cant see it listed on the Hope site?

And do you know if the Pro2/Crests on Winstanely come with everything you need to run them tubeless i.e. rim strip, valves and gloop?

For that matter do the Superstar ones come with these or do you need to get seperately?

Using my powers of deductive reasoning (subtracting) i think they will come in about the 1570g mark if you use the black rim, the white rim is painted and weighs about 35g a rim more.

Cheers for that, I'm never sure what to adding for spokes and nipples. So with qr's they should be around 1650 so say a 250g saving over my current set. I've never weighed a tube but there can't be that much between one and some latex?

Stands ready to be corrected ;)

Average tube weight I'v found to be about 200g, my current tubes are 300g each (Maxxis Freeride) to avoid pinch flats.

You can get tubes round the 100 mark, but I'v never tried these

i think the rims alone weight about 1500-1600kg. i.e straight out of the box no tyres or tubes.

you can get the stans/hope tubeless kit from winstanelys when you buy the wheels. was 20quid when i ordered mine. contains a roll of 25mm wide yellow tape, 2 small sealant bottles (enough for 2 wheels), and 2 presta valves with removable cores.

running these wheels tubeless over my old set of Mavic XM317 with tubes and tyres i reacon iv saved 400-500g.

Best contact for Superstar is to email them (never answered the phone to me), but takes a few days for them to respond.
