Do you need to replace a tyre when a shard of glass has gone though it? may seem a stupid question.

I've just bought a set of Schwalbe Durano Plus tyres. hoping theyd be the most puncture resistant tyres i can get for a road bike and on the first outing I got a flat. The shard of glass was small and only just snuck through and nicked the tube. I'll be gutted if i need to fork out another 30 odd bucks on a new one!

depends how big the hole is

sounds like it's tiny, in which case ignore it

i get loads of nicks and cuts, especially when the roads are wet (it lubricates the sharp stuff), they don't cause a problem

if it's big enough to let the tube sneak through as it's inflated, you can use a tyre boot to save the tyre, although i'd be wary of doing this on a front tyre as any failure there is riskier (so move tyre to the rear)

if it's so large that the tyre is weakened, i.e. the tyre is visibly bulging as you inflate it, bin the tyre

Anyone have any long term experience of using a split tyre with a tyre boot? Just patched up a sidewall failure on a gatorskin and reluctant to spend £25 or so if I don't have to!

Of course, I could replace it with one of my touring tyres, but it would look a bit odd running a 28 front and 35 rear!

I would purely regard a tyre boot as an emergency `fix it` and replace asap with new tyre. Not worth the risk IMO

if small enough I have once.
No problem but kept an eye on it and only on the back wheel.
Changed it when boot started to ware inner tube for me it was about 4 months.
